Light Intensity during Green-Leaf Butterhead Lettuce Propagation Influences Yield and Carotenoids at Harvest

چکیده
Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) operations must increase resource-use efficiency, yield, and phytonutrient concentrations to remain competitive. Carotenoids are phytonutrients of interest due their purported health promoting effects. Their content is impacted by environmental controls, including lighting. Light-use efficiency increases with greater planting density, which highest during seedling production. This creates the opportunity raise light intensity production improve growth characteristics at harvest. Therefore, objective this research was quantify extent influences carotenoid accumulation in green butterhead lettuce seedlings, if differences Lettuce ‘Rex’ (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings were grown under fluorescent lighting intensities 60, 100, 200, 400, or 600 µmol·m−2·s−1 a 24-h photoperiod. After 14 days, transplanted into raft hydroponic systems common greenhouse for 21 days. At transplant final harvest, tissue samples collected stored −80 °C analysis. Carotenoids, β-carotene, lutein, neoxanthin, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin, chlorophylls b quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We observed 475% fresh mass enhancement 400 versus 60 µmol·m−2·s−1, 174% improvement persisting Higher also generally increased leaf numbers as well concentrations. Final harvest decreased increasing intensity. Thus, producers should be cognizant that strongly finished morphology, content.

Survival of enteric pathogens during butterhead lettuce growth: crop stage, leaf age, and irrigation.
The survival of Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson and Escherichia coli O157 was investigated on growing butterhead lettuce plants in the plant-growth chamber and greenhouse. All inoculation tests were made under conditions that approximate the greenhouse conditions for butterhead lettuce cultivation in Flanders (Belgium). The survival and proliferation of the pathogens on the leaves was dete...

Enteric viruses account for most foodborne illness in the United States. The objective of this study was to determine whether the isoelectric point (pI) of viruses such as feline calicivirus (FCV), echovirus 11, and bacteriophages phiX174 and MS2 had any effect on their attachment to butterhead lettuce. The adsorption of virus particles to the lettuce was variable. Bacteriophage MS2 was the onl...

This study evaluated the potential of high photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) from high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, alone or in combination with metal halide (MH) plus quartz iodide (QI) incandescent lamps, to support lettuce growth, with or without N supplementation. Varying exposures to radiation from combined HPS, MH, and QI lamps influenced dry weight gain and photosynthetic pigment content...
متن کاملGreen-light supplementation for enhanced lettuce growth under red- and blue-light-emitting diodes.
Plants will be an important component of future long-term space missions. Lighting systems for growing plants will need to be lightweight, reliable, and durable, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have these characteristics. Previous studies demonstrated that the combination of red and blue light was an effective light source for several crops. Yet the appearance of plants under red and blue ligh...
